About the Event
Course description: This course is designed for those wishing to grasp some of the basic skills of working with lime mortar. The course will look at lime putty and hydraulic lime, sands and the use of horse hair. Mixes and recipes for different applications. Hands on experience of pointing, plastering, (onto stone and laths) rendering, and stone repairs.
The course takes place on and within a working barn in close proximity to Leckhampton Hill in Gloucestershire. One of the important objectives of the courses being held here is to repair the fabric of the building so that your work will be available for subsequent courses to learn from. This is an intense course which will be tailored to meet the requirements of the participants where possible.
Notes and Limitations
- The course is partly outside and so you should be prepared for all weather conditions
- Lime doesn't come off clothes easily, if at all, and you will get some lime on you.
- The course is aimed at home owners and beginners, the instructor will pass on many tips and tricks as well as the usual established techniques. However, it does not seek to be definitive or prescriptive and so some content may contradict what you may have already been learned elsewhere
Instructor:
Ben Kerslake, of CarringtonLIME, has been working in the conservation and restoration industry for almost 20 years. After completing his Msc in Architecture, Ben developed a keen interest in using traditional methods and as a result has been working predominantly with lime for the last 10 years. His work includes two Grand Designs projects, working on the restoration of Griff Rhys Jones Welsh cottage complex, numerous listed properties throughout the county as well as working with Gloucester council to present informative seminars on historic houses and suitable materials to local homeowners.
